이 시는 인간은 순수하게 태어나서 시간이 흘러 경험이 축적되면서 서서히 타락해간다. 아동 시절의 순수함과 깨끗함은 삶의 언어에 대해 친숙해지고 역경과 고난을 거치면서 굳어진다. 순수와 경험은 상반되고 윌리엄 블레이크1757-1827에게 순수의 노래는 아담이 타락하기 이전의 순수를 의미하고, 경험의 노래는 타락하여 에덴에서 추방된 이후의 인간을의미 그래서 삶에 있어서는 어린 시절과 어른이 순수와 경험을 대변하고. 경험이 축적되는 성장 과정의 타락 속에서 나타난다고 표현함. 이시는 목차에서 보듯이 순수의 시와 경험의 시로 나누어서 표현함.
